The basic principles of composting are applied to the treatment of sewage sludge. Composting systems are reviewed, and it is demonstrated by reference to international experience that composting is a viable method for sludge treatment. Current attitudes and approaches to the composting option in the UK are discussed and opportunities for further development are identified.
