The paper describes the development, introduction and operation of quality assurance, with specific application to the design and construction industry and the consequential benefits which can be derived from the adoption of formalized quality assurance supported by third‐party certification. The main objectives of formalized third‐party quality‐assurance certification are in respect of: (i) quality‐management systems of firms who provide a service to the industry and who meet the requirements of BS 5750 1 , EN 29000 2 , ISO 9000 3 ; and (ii) product conformity to firms who show compliance with a national or other approved specification and who operate a BS5750 quality‐management system.
