ABSTRACT A coordinated research and implementation programme (the River Basin Management programme) involving a number of funding organizations is described, which sets out to bridge the gap between academic research and practical application of the findings in upgrading sewerage systems. The key to success is seen to be involving the end user as soon as possible in field trials, to assist the researchers in proving and enhancing the methodology. Using these tools, an integrated approach to receiving‐water quality standards achievement is possible, which is seen to give substantial environmental benefits and capital cost savings when compared to the rigid application of best available technology.
