SYNOPSIS T he WORK DESCRIBED is part of a feasibility study for the rehabilitation of the Old Lands irrigation areas in Egypt. Despite much previous work there is still some controversy regarding the consumptive use of water by crops in Egypt. The present study utilized the Energy Balance (sometimes also called Bowen Ratio) method to determine the actual evapotranspiration occurring over crops. It was found that the modified form of the Penman equation recommended by the Food and Agriculture Organization overestimated evapotranspiration by approximately 30 per cent. Alternatively, the use of an earlier form of the Penman equation yielded acceptable estimates.
