T he quality of groundwater from the chalk beneath the City of London is discussed in relation to the geology and overpumping of the aquifer in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The current quality of the water is describd with reference to analyses carried out, and reasons for variation in quality between boreholes are suggested. Current quality is compared with that of 50 years ago, revealing major changes in the chemical characteristics of the water which are explained in terms of changing groundwater levels.
