T here is now a growing interest in the importance of bacteria in the understanding of groundwater resources and groundwater engineering. With increasing economic and practical pressures on engineers to optimize groundwater engineering, attention is being turned to well performance. Presently, in water engineering practice there are significant gaps in the understanding of the part played by bacteria in processes which lead to reduced well yield. This paper provides a summary of current knowledge and is based to a large degree on information generated at an international workshop and symposium on the subject, which the author attended in Canada and the USA in 1986, and also on recent studies in the UK.
