SYNOPSIS T he paper outlines the development of a sludge disposal strategy for the City of Coventry, from 1939 onwards. The aim of the paper is to show how a fundamental change in philosophy from gravity thickening to mechanical dewatering led to the construction of a £1.5 million dewatering plant. It provides a detailed appraisal of the first year of operation, and attempts to identify the major problem areas which led to plant performance failing to achieve expectations. The concluding paragraphs describe the on‐site work which is currently being undertaken, the results of which will eventually dictate the most suitable operational option.
