Five samples of dispersed sedimentary organic matter from the Clay Cross marine band around Gainsborough in the East Midlands of England have been subjected to optical, elemental and stable carbon isotope analysis, together with capillary gas chromatography and gas chromatography — mass spectrometry examinations of their solvent extracts, in an attempt to discern variations in conditions ofdeposition. These results are then compared and contrasted to similar analyses performed upon other lithological units from the same region.
