This paper studies the life and grant time of patent applications in C anada by using two survival analysis approaches: the K aplan– M eier estimator and the C ox proportional hazards estimator. The analysis of this paper shows that non‐ P atent C ooperation T reaty ( PCT ) patent applications and more complex patent applications survive longer and need more time to be granted. Moreover, foreign and small entity patent applications survive longer. Being granted has a very significant impact on survival time. Finally, there is a statistically significant difference among I nternational P atent C lassification ( IPC ) main classes in terms of survival time.
