I want to consider a few of the challenges relativism poses to American educators. The thought has been present in the world, since the time of Socrates, that relativism is perhaps the obstacle in a sophisticated, democratic regime to genuinely thought‐provoking and soul‐forming education. This thought has been reinvigorated impressively by Allan Bloom's justly celebrated and genuinely controversial The Closing of the American Mind. 1
