Major developmental and psychosocial changes occur in adolescence. Adolescents strive for separation from family, independence, establishment of identity and realization of sexuality. The rapid changes in society have had marked effects on the adolescent's environment and on his adjustment to that environment. Increased mobility, changes in family stability and new standards of sexual behavior must be taken into account in attempting to understand the adolescent and his behavior. Normal developmental behavior in adolescence is sometimes judged to be a serious emotional problem; at other times serious emotional problems are not appreciated. Careful assessment of developmental and psychosocial factors is important in making this differentiation. At the time of such assessment, the health professional will establish his own criteria for consultation and referral according to his interest and experience.
