The history of the pursuit of consumer education regarding prescription drugs reflects a shift from consumer dependence on public institutions and the medical establishment for information and protection to self‐help and cooperation with health professionals in an effort to improve the quality of health care today. The promotion of voluntary programs for consumer prescription drug education by new government and private sector organizations is outlined and recent baseline research conducted to monitor progress is described. Finally, an expanded role for consumer affairs professionals is recommended.
