Analyses of the demand for life insurance have seldom included any explanatory factors which measure a family's perceived need for postdeath financial resources. The study reported here includes these types of socio‐economic variables with the findings indicating that the nearer to the present a perceived need is, the more likely it is to have an effect on a family's holdings of individually purchased life insurance.
