Traditionally, the water well contractor adds a section of blank casing to the bottom of the well screen in a production well. This practice has been carried over to ground water monitoring wells by some engineers and hydrogeologists, and is even recommended by the RCRA Technical Enforcement Guidance Document (TEGD). After examining the proclaimed advantages, it is the author's opinion that the well foot is not necessary for a monitoring well.
