A dozen case histories of actual waste site puzzles or apparent anomalies, which are initially counterintuitive, are presented. The article emphasizes practical needs for multiple hypotheses, multidisciplinary analyses and open‐minded approaches to solve the puzzles. The article recounts how solutions were found to the selected puzzles and provides the solutions.
