. “Iron bacteria” which are known to occur in water wells are briefly described, along with a history and description of their economic significance. The main concerns of this monograph are the laboratory and culture methods described by the various authors and those currently in practice. A bibliography of the limited valuable literature is provided and commented upon. Species of concern are Gallionella ferruginea and those species of the Leptothrix Sphaerotilus group. Emphasis is on the rapid and reliable identification of these organisms.
