IN BRIEF This article presents a model for the strategic alignment of functional strategies using the Product Life Cycle (PLC) as the “common strategic denominator.” The model serves to fill a void in the strategic literature citing a need for the integration of different functional‐level strategies into a holistic business strategy. The results of the purchasing portion of a three‐part empirical investigation involving purchasing, manufacturing, and logistics professionals is presented in this paper. The results are based on the input of 126 purchasing executives who served to identify the strategic importance of the PLC in purchasing planning as well as when to implement specific purchasing strategies for the most effective results during stages of the PLC.
