This article reports the results of an investigation of the changes in the role of the professional buyer that result from JIT implementation. The researchers interviewed two samples of buyers, totaling 60 respondents, either face‐to‐face or by telephone. From an operating point of view, the study found that higher product quality and supplier service levels as well as closer buyer‐supplier relationships developed. The role of the buyer was found to expand into other functions of the business, such as production and marketing, focusing less on specific transaction details and more on the maintenance of supplier relationships. Implications for practitioners, educators, and researchers are discussed.
