The purchase of information technologies (IT) by service companies is a crucial element in the effective management of the information processes of these companies. In this article the authors report the results of a study of the acquisitions and management of IT in a sample of 67 companies in 5 service sectors. The results indicate, first, that most service companies follow a logical purchasing process with 5 distinguishable steps, and second, that the size of the company is the best explanation for differences in the use of decision factors by service companies.
