This article is developed around a case study that investigates the management strategy and execution of a major multi‐year effort to streamline and integrate the materiel management process within the United States Postal Service (USPS). Based on the USPS operating environment, along with related support challenges, the article examines the key top‐level initiatives developed to facilitate the integration effort. It also addresses in detail a number of central elements or tenets that underlie USPS strategic materiel management thinking. The objective of the article is to provide for purchasing and materials managers who work in large complex institutional units a case study in the strategy and tactics of integrating the materials management processes.
