The increased emphasis on quality, coupled with Purchasing's role as a communication channel, has placed new requirements on the buyer. A knowledge of statistics, once considered to be the domain of Quality Assurance, is becoming a necessary tool for many buyers. Understanding the philosophy of statistical process control is a prerequisite to understanding a supplier's quality capability. This article looks at the basics of SPC and examines the indicators a buyer should look for in supplier quality evaluation.
