Although computer systems provide real benefits for a purchasing department, they also have a major limitation. Maintaining the accuracy and the timeliness of updates to the various data files can be a time‐consuming task for the buyer. This article discusses one solution to the problem, in which the computer file “almost” maintains itself–with very little effort by the buyer or by systems personnel.
