Current college environmental measures are examined with reference to several criteria: whether they are designed to obtain general knowledge or to aid decision making, whether they provide information that distinguishes among institutions or within institutions, and whether they focus on an institution's characteristics or on the people in the institution. Current measures do not seem to be expressly designed to provide information for decision making or information about problems within institutions.
