Asia looks to generate more coal‐fired electricity

Rising oil prices are prompting a switch from oil back to coal in several parts of Asia. Indonesia plans to cut consumption of heavy fuel oil by 16% this year in favour of coal, whilst China plans to shut down many small oil‐fired power stations, replacing them with coal and other forms of energy. India meanwhile is to encourage private investment in its nationalized coal industry in an attempt to increase the use of coal there.
