The inauguration of the Oryx gas‐to‐liquids (GTL) plant in Qatar in June marked the start of an ambitious programme to transform the Gulf emirate into the world's largest producer of liquids from natural gas. Nevertheless, despite the optimism that was expressed at the inauguration of the plant, despite the high quality of its output, and despite even the growing demand worldwide for high quality petroleum liquids, GTL's future appears to be in some doubt.
