The prospect of high oil and gas prices for many years in the future is prompting a re‐evaluation of nuclear power. Its prospects have been given a further boost by growing concerns over climate change and the possible link with the increased use of fossil fuels. Some oil‐importing countries, notably the US, want to reduce their reliance on countries they regard as unstable or potentially hostile ( see 'Focus', October 2005 ). Again, nuclear power is seen as an alternative.
