As more and more countries announce plans for gas‐to‐liquids (GTL) units, the US is planning to use the same technology to produce liquids from coal. GTL normally requires the feedstock to be available cheaply, but gas prices have been rising sharply in recent months, especially in the US. Coal, on the other hand, is much cheaper. Another potential source of cheap feedstock is heavy residues produced in refineries. Here, though, the opposite is also planned: the conversion of liquids into gas.
