This paper analyzes the changes in total output, total inputs and productivity of Canadian agriculture for the period 193! to 1960. The constant dollar method was used to measure inputs and outputs. The total output/total input ratios are purported to reflect changes in the overall productivity of the inputs. The study measures the changes which have occurred in the “economic trilogy” of land, labor and capital and also the capital input “mix”. The forces behind the changes in the input mix and the implications of growth in productivity for agriculture and the overall economy are examined in the paper. Finally, the trends in incomes in agriculture from farming are compared with non‐farm incomes during the postwar period.
