Summary Significant differences in susceptibility of 23 bean cultivars were found after natural infection by a single‐pustule isolate of bean rust in field trials over three seasons. These differences were not related to differences in the number of adaxial or abaxial acicular leaf hairs, latent period in primary leaves or a difference in pustule size. Forty‐five large‐seeded bean lines with partial resistance to a single‐pustule isolate were developed by recurrent selection for commercial evaluation.
