SUMMARY The effects of artificially defoliating radish at different times during growth were examined in pot experiments. Hypocotyl yields were negative linear functions of the level of defoliation irrespective of the stage at which this occurred as the plants were unable to compensate for loss of foliage. Yield was proportional to leaf area duration and greatest losses in yield followed the earliest defoliations.
