SUMMARY The emergence of volunteer potatoes and their regrowth after the cereal harvest were studied in four barley crops. Cutting the shoots of the potato plants before or during cereal harvest did not prevent regrowtth of many of them afer harevet. There was more regrowth (i) after winter barley, (ii) after barley grown at above normal seed rates and (iii) when the early growth of the potatoes in May an June ws suppesed by dry conditions. In one experiment the number of emerged plants on 12 May was negatively correlated with the number of emerged plants on 12 May was negatiely correlated with the number regrowing in September. These studies suggest that control of volunteer potatoes may be possible with foliar applied herbicides after cereal harvest.
