SUMMARY Pleospora bjoerlingii was more prevalent on the seed of some sugar beet cultivars than others following both a dry seed harvest when infection was scarce and a wet harvest when superficial infection of seed was common. Methods of cultivation and harvesting that delayed ripening and increased the exposure of the seed to rainfall in a wet season increased the incidence of seed‐borne P. bjoerlingii but the incidence of the fungus on the seed of different cultivars was independent of the effect of cultivar on the time of ripening of the crop.
