SUMMARY An experimental deer farm has been in operation on heather dominant upland in Kincardineshire since 1970 where the Rowett Research Institute and the Hill Farming Research Organisation have been exploring the possibility of intensifying venison production from such land. Six years' experience indicates that a tame foundation stock of red deer is a feasible basis for making good use of such land for the production of lean deer meat.
