SUMMARY The fumigant effect of metaldehyde on slugs is confirmed and shown almost certainly to be caused by impure metaldehyde breaking down to the volatile parent monomer, acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde was slightly more toxic to Agriolimax reticulatus than to Arion hortensis.
