The white rot fungus ( Sclerotium cepivorum ) spread more rapidly between onion plants touching one another than between separated plants; the proportion of plants infected, over a range of spacing distances, was approximately inversely proportional to the spacing. The fungus invades the bulb through roots, and spread from plant to plant was prevented by not allowing contact between their roots.
