Inoculation experiments using bacteria alone did not produce the bacterial disease of wheat: inoculations with mixed bacteria and nematodes were successful. The bacteria within the nematode galls retain their viability for 2 1/2 years. The bacterial disease is more damaging to the wheat plant than the nematode infection.
