SUMMARY An organism culturally resembling Bacillus lathyri Manns and Taubenhaus has been isolated from Aphis rumicis Linn. The aphides showed evidence of disease, in that they died within 24 hours of removal from the host plant. Bacteriological examination of healthy aphides indicated that they are remarkably free from bacteria; few colonies were found in cultures, even when made from the crushed insects. The writer desires to express his gratitude to Dr F. Tattersfield, of Rothamsted Experimental Station, for the provision of a normal colony of A. rumicis ; to Dr Mary Barratt, of the Lister Institute, for confirmation of certain of the cultural characteristics; and to his colleagues on the staff of the Cooper Technical Bureau, who have given him helpful advice.
