Summary I n the selection of employees for routine clerical positions, a growing concern has been expressed in the problem of tenure. It was the purpose of this study to construct a meaningful selection instrument which would enable prediction of probable tenure for female clerical applicants at a large midwestern insurance company. The independent variables consisted of self‐reported biographical data from the standard employee application blank and the results of tests administered by the personnel department. A sample of 440 female clerical employees was utilized, the selection instrument being developed on one‐half of the sample and validated on the remaining half. In the final analysis, it was concluded that the resulting instrument, which yielded a composite correlation coefficient of .51, was amenable to practical application.
