In 1990 the author visited several Russian psychiatric facilities, including two inpatient units and a community‐based outpatient facility in Moscow. An analysis, based on interviews with staff and observations of clients, is presented. The author found an unexpectedly high level of openness among staff members, and a willingness to discuss both the accomplishments and the deficiencies of Soviet psychiatric care.
