Many instruments are available to augment assessment of psychiatric patients. There is little comparative information regarding reliability and validity of these tools on assessing treatment needs, in predicting future behavior, and in classifying psychiatric patients. The purpose of the descriptive study was to provide comparative information on the Nosie‐30, Pardue‐Dick and the Revised Allen Cognitive Level Test. A significant correlation was found between the total Nosie‐30 and the Pardue‐Dick and between the Revised ACL and the Nosie‐30. The scores on the Pardue‐Dick and the R‐ACL were not related. Summary The analysis of the data in this study offered information about 60 patient subjects relative to the R‐ACL, the Pardue‐Dick, and the Nosie‐30. Additionally, information was obtained on the relationship of the three instruments to each other. The information was revealing, since each instrument measures different facets of patient behavior and needs. While the Nosie‐30 assesses positive and negative areas of behavioral functioning, the R‐ACL assesses cognitive functioning, and the Pardue‐Dick estimates nursing care needs. While this study investigated the relationship of the R‐ACL, the Pardue‐Dick, and the Nosie‐30 with 60 chronic mental patients, the exact relationship of these instruments needs further investigation. The correlations between scores from these instruments, even when statistical significance was attained, were of rather low degree, and of undetermined clinical significance.
