Aided by nurses using the belief clarification approach to intervention, a group of 20 females participated in eight structured sessions that addressed their beliefs and attitudes about being overweight. One participant redefined her negative experience into a more positive and realistic one that included recognizing additional sources of stress that contributed to low self‐esteem and negative body image. The overweight experience is discussed in terms of unrealistic expectations of dieting and weight loss.
