Restraining an aggressive or violent patient does not require special training in the martial arts, nor does it require reliance on one or two “line‐backer” types to bring the patient under control. But if and when a patient does become aggressive or violent you must know how to defend yourself. Dr. Allen T. Stewart, in his photo feature, illustrates specific techniques which can be used by a staff to restrain a weapon‐wielding patient.
