The main way ISPs captured the data gleaned during the consultation was by completing a checklist as soon as possible afterwards. In 6 studies, the ISPs used hidden microphones, although technology problems resulted in a loss of data in some instances. ISPs used in the studies were mostly assessed for their ‘consistency’–the accuracy of their presentation and ability to record the data from a consultation accurately and consistently– beforehand. A panel of observers would watch ISP practice sessions through a one-way mirror. In five projects the ISP was also audiorecorded to check for consistency.
