T he mini Clinical Evaluation Exercise or mini-CEX is a method for simultaneously assessing the clinical skills of trainees and offering them feedback on their performance. It is a simple modification of the traditional bedside oral examination and because of that, it relies on the use of real patients and the judgments of skilled clinician educators. This article describes the mini-CEX, recounts how it was developed, and then illustrates its use in the Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) Foundation Programme Assessment.
