. The fundamental principle of prevention for older people is to increase quality of life and to promote optimal functioning, ideally at an independent level. This paper examines the nature of health promotion from an older person's perspective, it provides a brief overview of current health promotion efforts, it examines a selection of programs and it looks at the implications for healthy ageing programs. Finally, it draws a series of conclusions about the future of health promotion initiatives for older people.
