. It was in the late 1960s to the early 1970s, when ageing began to be recognised as a social problem, that gerontological studies began to attract attention in Korea, and a beginning was made in geriatrics at that time. Over the next quarter of a century, gerontological studies developed to become a multi‐disciplinary and applied science which involves a variety of disciplines, and is also making contributions to policy formulation in Korea. This paper has three purposes: it canvasses the emergence of social awareness of the problems of ageing in Korea, it reviews the historical development of gerontology associations and their roles and activities, and it considers issues that will shape the future development of the field.
