An understanding of the β A4/APP metabolic pathway is recognised as vital to the elucidation of the nature of Alzheimer's disease. This paper overviews early shrdies of the Alzheimer's disease plaque amyloid the subsequent identification of the amyloid protein precursor (APP) and its gene, and the description of the structure and function of APP and βA4 .
