The educational experience of students in gerontology and related professional areas of education, such as gerontological social work, is enriched by exposure to creative works that deal with topics in ageing. Such works are a way of engaging students in an empathic understanding of ageing. Two recent Australian novels, Thea Astiey's Coda and Dorothy Hewett's The Toucher, are discussed in relation to the ways they confront stereotypical thinking about older women.
