A study of the relationship between violent behaviour and nursing staffing levels on a psychogeriatric ward is described. An association between violent behaviour and nursing staffing levels, over a 24 month period, was not demonstrated. These findings cast doubt on previous studies which used similar methodology to demonstrate associations between violence and staffing levels. Further prospective studies using well validated and reliable instruments to measure violence are required, particularly because the present climate of cost‐efficiency and cut‐backs induces pressure to reduce staffing levels.
