Recent research on the role of health in cognitive ageing is reviewed to show that the relationship between health and cognitive function is still not entirely clear, possibly due to methodological limitations in health measurement When the relationship has been reported, its effect appears to be small Recent research suggests that sensorimotor abilities may have a stronger association with cognitive function in old age than health. This study aimed to evaluate the relationships between health, sensorimotor function and cognition by evaluating two alternative models using structural equation modelling. These analyses suggested that while health may have a negligible direct effect on cognition in old age it may have a significant direct effect via sensorimotor processes.
